About this deal

This helps the Kinvara stay at just over 7 ounces; the cushioning comfort also isn’t lacking, as long as the runs stay under a half-marathon distance.

The inner side has a firmer foam wedge (aka the medial post) to create the traditional stability running shoe experience. But that’s not the highlight of the Tempus; that would be the EVA frame that wraps around the heel and midfoot. These shoes felt really smooth and quick on our feet, allowing us to soar through technical trails and enjoy our time outdoors.

In the trail running line-up, the 4 mm offset Peregrine 12 got a brand new insole that’s made entirely of the responsive Pwrrun+ (E-TPU) foam. The PWRRUN midsole’s flexibility allows for natural movement and mechanics of the foot while the lightweight quality allows for quick turnover, say if you wanted to do strides at the end of an easy run, for example. They are meant to bring the familiar experience of your favorite road shoes to the trail, but with added grip and protection. The decoupled heel is also designed to create a little more lateral bias at the rearfoot, which seems to stabilize my heel and mechanics well upon landing. Due to the entire midsole and outsole being foam, there is nothing rigid allowing for added support.

OUR VERDICT The 12th iteration of the Saucony Kinvara doesn’t deviate in any major ways from the Kinvara lineage: it’s still a supremely reliable, lightweight and responsive shoe that can handle long miles. It’s not the same plate as the road version, though – the forefoot is articulated for better proprioceptive feedback. The heel is beveled without excess foam sticking out the back, and both the heel and forefoot have a flared base. It will be delightfully welcomed by the runner who especially doesn’t care for a maximally cushioned shoe.

I prefer shoes that let my foot do what it wants to do, and the Kinvara 13 is one of the best examples of a shoe that does so. The 4mm drop and flexible sole do require good gastrocsoleus and foot intrinsic strength, so runners who are accustomed to higher drop should transition cautiously to the Kinvara. It is a little slippery in the forefoot as it’s a bit wide and the opening of the upper is a little too narrow to easily slip the shoe on. It will be interesting to see how many miles I get on these, considering that I normally get only 200 miles on the New Balance Beacon, which has a similarly designed outsole. Most people may not be able to use this as a long run shoe due to this design not being as common, but for moderate to shorter length workouts it will do well. With no added carbon plate and less foam underfoot, this model feels a bit less responsive than other models, but there is no denying that this is one of the fastest shoes in our lineup, thanks to its ultra-lightweight design. Through the years, the Kinvara continues to offer a smart, sleek and simple design enjoyed by all types of runners.
