About this deal

Another benefit of using felt on a roof is that it is relatively inexpensive, whilst still providing a good and durable roofing surface. This is why it is perfect for low-scale and relatively low-budget projects, to create a functional yet low-cost roof. Then fit your shingle underlay onto the exposed roof. Ensure that your underlay extends beyond the edges of the roof by around 50mm. The underlay will be applied in strips, with each strip overlapping the previous one by at least 75mm. Then turn down the edges and nail it at 500mm centres. Preparing The Roof For Felt Shingles Installation advice on installation of IKO shingles from a practical point of view: https://www.tuin.co.uk/blog/fitting-felt-shingles-for-log-cabins/ Next, measure the surface of the shed roofing to calculate how much felt you’ll need – don’t forget to add an extra 5-7.5cm for overlaps at the edges and the gables. Generally, if felting a pitched shed roof you’ll require 3 pieces of felt – 1 for each side and then one to overlap the two edges, but this may vary depending on the size of the shed roof and the width of the felt rolls. 3. Lay the first piece of felt

Whether you’re re-roofing a shed, or constructing a brand-new summer house, feltshingles are an affordable, practical, and stylish roofing solution. These shingles are expertly manufactured using high-tensile felt coated with tough bitumen fibres to ensure superb durability, a watertight seal, and a modern aesthetic at an affordable price. Hammered-down rolled roofing should not be used on flat roofs as this could lead to leaks. Felt is an extremely lightweight material, which means it can be used on a number of weaker and less structurally sound buildings, such as garden sheds and outbuildings without any concerns that it will be too heavy. Easy to install

To set the first row of shingles you will need to trim some material from one edge of the shingle strip before fixing them at the eaves. With the square butt shingles, this should be 125mm. Or if using fishscale shingles, trim off 100mm. You’ll need to do this for all odd-numbered rows. To carry out the ridge detailing cut the individual tabs from a strip mitred by 40mm. On the roof again use a chalk line or straight edge to ensure correct positioning and alignment. Starting at one end locate the tap with the mitred edge, pointing along the ridge. Nail into position, ensuring that each ridge shingle overlaps the previous one, exposing about 145mm. Next, lay the second layer of felt on the roof. Ensure any joins on the first layer are overlapped, and any air bubbles have been smoothed out, and then nail it down as before. 8. Spread adhesive

A Supaflex Ridge Roll is available, this is a 10m roll-out ridge roll designed to match the colours of the Supaflex Shingles. These rolls are 10m in length and made of the same high-quality materials that the Supaflex shingles are made of. Each roll has a bitumen base that has been covered in high quality coloured mineral finish. These rolls are heavy-duty and come with free 20mm nails. At the corners of the roof, cut the roofing shingles to create an overlap when Folded around the corner, then nail this into position. Fixing The Felt Shingles in Place From fantastic affordability and strength to attractive style and aesthetics, felt roofing shingles offer a variety of benefits that make them ideal for a countless number of projects. At Roofing Superstore our choice of flat roof materialsincludes everything you need to create a long-lasting, weatherproof flat roof that performs and looks good too. Including fibreglass roof kits, torch-on felt, and liquid rubber products, everything you need for flat roofing is in one place. Whether you’re repairing a flat roof or laying a new one from scratch, you’ll find all the materials you need here. Roofing felt Spread adhesive on the second layer of felt as before, and then place the final layer of felt on top. Again, ensure there are no air bubbles, there is at least 5cm of overlap and there is also overlap around the edges of the roof. 9. Smooth the surface

To seal joints and openings apply a bead of lap mastic around the perimeter edges of overlap sections. On the last cover strip, apply an extra bead to ensure a secure bond. Now take the second piece of shed felt and lay it across the roof, ensuring there is an overlap over the first roll of felt – try to ensure this is around 5-7.5cm. Again, nail the top of the roofing felt into place. 5. Add felt adhesive For maximum life, most manufacturers recommend the use of an underlay - our felt shingle underlay is the perfect partner for these Supaflex Felt Roof Shingles. The next step is to begin fixing the felt to your roof. Use galvanised clout nails to nail the first sheet of felt onto the roof. We’d recommend nailing from the centre of the edge of the sheet and working outwards. Leave about 5cm between each nail, and ensure the sheet is pulled tight and sitting in line with the roof. 5. Add more felt if required Our range of roof shingles encompasses felt, bitumen and cedar options, so you can choose the right material for your roof. Shingles in our cedar range include Western Red and Eastern White, or for an impressive finish, you could opt for hexagonal tiles over the more traditional square.

Why buy from Tuin?

Felt roof repair is relatively easy. The material can simply be patched up if there is a tear or hole in the roof, unlike other roof materials that can have a much more complex and time-consuming repair process. Budget-friendly Once both sides of the roof have been felted, a capping sheet is required. This is a piece of felt that sits over the ridge of the roof. The capping sheet needs to be placed across the top of the roof, ensuring that there is a 7.5cm overlap over the felt on each side of the roof. Apply felt roof adhesive to the underside of the ridge sheet on both sides and press it into place, before nailing it down at 5cm intervals. Aesthetics: Available in a range of styles, colours, and textures, felt shingles give you the freedom to create the perfect aesthetic for you. We only supply the best and IKO is the world renowned leader of felt roof shingles. Used all over the world they will protect your log cabin or garden building. This is similar to a standard roofing felt and if you are choosing to use a membrane we would recommend felt over the IKO membrane.

Replacing The Old Damaged Felt

Next, you need to make shingle strips for the roof edges. Cut off the tabs from a single shingle strip to create the detailing pieces. Bitumen felt shingles are manufactured by pressing granules into a glass fibre bitumen felt strip. These strips feature designs like ‘ square butt’, which is a simple square pattern on the finished roof, or ‘ hexagonal’ which offers more contemporary hexagonal finishes. You’re also able to find ‘ half round’ style bitumen felt shingles which are the most traditional types of shingles that give a scalloped look.
