Description

A Demerara rum is probably a rum that someone with a more sweet tooth will take to. I have seen Ron Zacapa noted for being very sweet. I think this rum is sweeter. However, nothing about this rum seems artificial. You don’t get that caramel or spiced taste sum rums do carry. It never becomes cloying. Okay onto the actual rum. The first thing I notice about the rum is that as soon as the cork is popped it exhibits that El Dorado smell. Inspite of the numerous other rums which use DDL rums as their base or entire blend, nothing smells quite like an El Dorado rum. Sweet, almost flowery but very difficult to place, with light whifts of brown sugar. In 1535, Sebastian de Benalcazar, a lieutenant of Francisco Pizarro, interrogated an Indian that had been captured at Quito. Luis Daza recorded that the Indian was a warrior while Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas wrote that the Indian was an ambassador who had come to request military assistance from the Inca, unaware that they had already been conquered. The Indian told Benalcazar that he was from a kingdom of riches known as Cundinamarca far to the north where a zipa, or chief, covered himself in gold dust during ceremonies. [14] Benalcazar set out to find the chief, reportedly saying "Lets go find that golden Indian!" ( Spanish: ¡Vámos a buscar a este indio dorado!), [15] eventually the chief became known to the Spaniards as El Dorado. [16] Benalcazar failed however to find El Dorado and eventually joined up with Federmann and Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada and returned to Spain. [16] It has been speculated that the land of wealth spoken of by the Indian was Arma, a kingdom whose inhabitants wore gold ornaments, which was eventually conquered by Pedro Cieza de Leon. Originally founded in 1878, the Havana Club brand began in 1934, producing significant amounts of rum for European export. Light in color yet powerful in flavor, sweet aromas with hints of oak dominate, while the palate is mild, fruit-forward, and slightly citrusy. Sweet and simple, this bottle is a classic for rum lovers everywhere. Average price: N/A Mount Gay Rum Extra Old a b Laughton, John Knox (1885–1900). "Kemys, Lawrence (DNB00)". Often seen as a benchmark in the world of aged rums, El Dorado is a brand that is well worth getting acquainted with as their older rums especially have much to offer. It was actually the 15 year old and it was their last bottle. To this day (24/09/14) I still haven’t tried the 8 year old. I’ve tried the 5 year old (for which I paid more than I would have paid for the 8 year old), 12 year old and this. Castellanos, Juan de (1850). "Parte III, Canto II". The gilded Indian then ... [threw] out all the pile of gold into the middle of the lake, and the chiefs who had accompanied him did the same on their own accounts. ... After this they lowered the flag, which had remained up during the whole time of offering, and, as the raft moved towards the shore, the shouting began again, with pipes, flutes and large teams of singers and dancers. With this ceremony the new ruler was received, and was recognized as lord and king. I’ve tasted quite a bit of White Rum lately and built up a fairly decent collection. To date I think the Lemon Hart White Rum has boasted the best score with most getting an average 2 star rating. Which I think is perfectly appropriate for what is mostly an unaged mixing spirit.

First of all, I am glad to tell you that my hiatus is finally over. In a broader sense, I work in public health, so the last year was a really demanding one and other things had priority. El Dorado 12 sits firmly at the bottom of El Dorado’s Luxury Cask Aged series. Starting at 12 years, these rums are getting firmly in the aged categorization from Smuggler’s Cove* and range up to 21 years. As is the usual, the age statement refers to the minimum aging of a rum used in the bottling. The presentation for the 12 yr, the 15 yr and the 21 yr old El Dorado Rums includes a squat smokey opaque brown bottle which has a funky old world charm and which looks great on my rum shelf. I like the fact that each rum in the series arrives in a smartly coloured display box which helps to protect the spirit from the deleterious effects of light. Finally each is closed with a quality cork topper which for me is the final requirement for a quality presentation. In the Glass 9.5/10

In 1637–38, two monks, Acana and Fritz, undertook several journeys to the lands of the Manoas, indigenous peoples living in western Guyana and what is now Roraima in northeastern Brazil. Although they found no evidence of El Dorado, their published accounts were intended to inspire further exploration. [38]

Awards for El Dorado 12

So here I am reviewing El Dorado 12 year old rum. I’ve already reviewed their 5 year old variant. I’ve also bought 3 bottles of their 15 year old. It’s not going to take a genius to work out how this review is heading……. Waterton, Charles (1891). Moore, Norman (ed.). Wanderings in South America.
